FAQ: Light Phone 2
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Indiegogo!

(Compatibility) Which model of Light Phone II is right for me?

We’ve made two models of the Light Phone II optimized for various regions of the world. The bands (antenna frequencies) that each carrier supports depends on the network, country, and region.

Below we’ve listed the exact 4G LTE bands that each model supports, and you can search for information about which bands your preferred service provider supports.

The North American Model uses these 4GLTE bands: B2, B4, B12, B13, B17, B25, B26.

The International Model uses theses 4GLTE bands: B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, B28

These models are optimized for their designated regions, and although they may be able to work outside that region as some of the bands do overlap, we cannot recommend using a Light Phone II outside of its region.

The Light Phone II takes a Nano SIM card.

Will I need to pay customs fees if I live outside the United States?

If you live outside the United States, there is a chance your country may impose custom fees in receiving your Light Phone II. These custom fees will be your responsibility as the recipient and we’ve tried our best to make this clear through out the campaign so we hope this does not come as a surprise.

The Light Phone II ships from our fulfillment center in Chicago.

If you decide to reject the shipment and it is returned to us, we can only refund the net value after our incurred shipping costs are subtracted. We seriously apologize for any inconvenience and genuinely appreciate your understanding that we are a small NY based team.

Refund, Return, and Warranty information

We’ve always offered full refunds to anyone’s pledge prior to shipping the device, which you can still ask about if you are no longer interested - [email protected]. Please send us your PayPal email address, since Indiegogo can no longer process refunds.,

However, as a super small company, once we ship your Light Phone II we can only currently accept returns due to manufacturer defects. If you believe you have a defective unit, please contact us at: [email protected].

We appreciate your support of project and really hope you enjoy your new phone. Thank you for understanding.

Light SIM - Light as your carrier

To make using the Light Phone II as seamless of an experience as possible, we’re offering an optional SIM plan for the Light Phone II available through Light directly. You can manage the plan through the same website dashboard that you manage your phone.

The basic plan costs $30/mo+tax and includes unlimited calls, texts, and simple tools. That means all of our future tools like directions or ride-share are included, but not data intense tools like hotspot or streaming. We will have an option to add data for hotspot/tethering as well when that is available as a Light Phone II feature.

Our SIM is supported by the AT&T network.

We’ll send the SIM at no additional cost, and you will set up your payment method when activating the SIM upon arrival of your phone. If you receive the SIM and do not activate, you will not be charged.

You will have the option to port your existing phone number or get a new phone number for the plan.

TAXES: Like all wireless plans in the US, there are some additional taxes, and these are specific to your local regulation. For example here in NYC for my $30/mo plan I will have to pay about $4.60 of taxes in addition to the cost of the plan. These include a variety of things like the Public Safety Communications Surcharge which is a fixed rate added to all lines, to local state taxes and fees which are usually percentage based. This tax is out of our control of course.

*Just to be clear, the Light SIM Plan is completely optional. You can use whatever compatible Nano SIM you’d like for the Light Phone, which could just be swapping the current SIM from your current smartphone, but the Light Phone does require an active SIM card to function.

Notes About the E-Ink Screen

The Light Phone II uses a unique E-Ink screen. Often referred to as “electronic paper”, it doesn’t have a backlight like traditional smartphones screens which means you can view the screen in a variety of harsh lighting like bright day light. It’s also easier on the eyes and has a beautiful matte finish. It consumes no battery to leave the last screen displayed and in general is quite battery efficient. E-Ink technology was made popular with the Kindle & other e-reader devices compared to traditional smartphones.

Other characteristics we want you to be aware of that are unique to E-Ink screens include screen refreshing and ghosting. The ghosting is when you can see a faint imprint of the previous screen. It’s subtle, and many even find it to be a beautiful characteristic, but we want to make sure everyone is aware of this effect. Screen refreshes involve the screen flashing between black and white colors to clear any previous ghosting. The screen will refresh regularly as you navigate through the device. There is a different cadence when using an E-ink device.

What is the Light Account Dashboard?

We’ve built a website portal to manage your Light Phone II and its account. The dashboard can be accessed via the web from a computer or smartphone. Using the dashboard you’ll be able to upload a batch of contacts, or as we build additional optional tools, you can add those as well to the device. There will be support documents and tips for using the device as well. Parents may use the dashboard to control and eventually locate their child’s Light Phone II.

You will receive an email about your Light Phone II account.

Product changes

Crowdfunding a project like the Light Phone II is an amazing opportunity to bring new products to life. However, it is impossible to predict every detail at the time of launching such a campaign prior to really going through the full engineering process. We tried our best to be realistic in our expectations, but some details have changed since we launched the campaign that we wanted to make sure everyone is aware of.

-We initially called the ‘light gray’ phone ‘white’ as it was always meant to match the lightest color of the e-ink screen, but we realized that the name was confusing as it is not pure white, but a light shade of gray.

-We initially hoped to use USB-C, but we had to switch to Micro-USB.

-We initially planned to use an aluminium back casing, but the aluminium casing proved problematic with our antenna design, which was also limited to the small form factor of the Light Phone II.

-We doubled the size of the battery as well to 950mAH, and the final dimensions of the phone are: 95.85mm long x 55.85mm wide x 8.75mm thick.

Accessories

We’ve created a protective case for the Light Phone II that you can add to your pledge. The case comes in two colors matching the phone itself and is available for $25. No additional shipping charges. The case may ship to some backers slightly behind their phone (around Sept. 15).

We are also offering additional cables (one does come included in the phone packaging) for users that may want a spare or to leave in their car, office etc. Those are available for $5, in both colors of the phone, and do not have any additional shipping charges either.

Tools

We have a long roadmap of optional future ‘tools’ that you can add to your Light Phone II over time. The first batch of tools we are planning to release include a calculator, directions, a simple music player, ride-sharing, notes, find-my-phone, and hot spot tethering. These tools will become available over the coming weeks as we develop them ongoing. The tools are free, always optional, and do not require a new model of the phone, they are simply wireless software updates. Looking forward to sharing those!

Does the Light Phone II sync with my smartphone?

We wanted to make sure everyone was aware that the Light Phone II does not ‘sync’ with your smartphone. It is a standalone mobile device, and it does require a SIM card to operate.

Many users will simply choose to swap their SIM card from their primary phone into the Light Phone II if it is compatible. This will maintain your phone number and no additional costs. If you use iMessage, it is recommended that you disable that when switching so you ensure all of your messages come through to your Light Phone II as texts.

Other users prefer to have a unique line for their Light Phone II, like a “home” and “work” phone. You can even use universal carrier codes to forward calls between the devices (there does not exist a way to forward messages, a carrier limitation).

Additionally, some carriers offer programs for “duplicate” SIMs (i.e. T-Mobile Digits). These programs allow you to get a second SIM from your existing plan that simulates the same phone number as your primary phone. This may be a great option for many users as well.

The Light Phone II can of course be used completely independent of a smartphone as user’s primary phone device, and we think that’s amazing!

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
